Village Life

Ek Ballam is a puebla, a 400 person village which survives on the production of hand made tortillas, hammocks and hand stitched clothing. There are ranches in the area where men work as well, but family life is all important, so working away from home is only done in dire times. These are basic Mayan homes, built from sticks with a palapa roof, and although the government provided blocks for homes here after the last hurricane, the block buildings are mostly used as storage or stores, as they are not as cool or comfortable as the traditonal homes. People are very friendly, as evidenced in these smiling faces!
