Isla Mujeres with Mary Lois

On a perfect day we caught the 8:30 am passenger ferry and headed to the Island of Women, Isla Mujeres, so named as it was known as a powerful fertility location during Mayan history.

The upper deck of the ferry gives you a great view of Cancun receding and the island coming into view, and since we were only going for the day, we decided it would give us more time than taking the car ferry. We walked through the lovely Hacienda Mundaca, built by an aging pirate to woo a young Mexian woman, who ditched the old guy to marry someone her own age and the pirate apparently died of a broken heart.

Mary Lois with the Mayan fertility goddess - obviously getting very chummy! We drove all over the island in the infamous golf cart, saw all the amazing home, the turtle sanctuary, the sad shanty town, and all the charming little cobblestone streets filled with shops, restaurants and friendly people.

We had lunch on the point that overlooks the most easterly point in all of Mexico - where the sun first kisses her every morning.

Had a lovely swim (that is Miki and ML in the warm water) and drinks on the west beach, where we spent a couple of hours enjoying the sun and surf. Finally, we sat at a beachfront cantina in the harbour, watched the sunset, had drinks and an appy and then caught the ferry back to Puerto Juarez where we picked up the car and drove home. Another wonderful day on Isla!!
